Anmeldung zur Winterfahrt

Die Anmeldung für die nächste Fahrt (19.-21.1.24) ist eröffnet. Falls ihr mitkommen wollt, tragt euch bis zum 12.1. (also Freitag nach den Weihnachtsferien) in die Umfrage ein.

Die Fahrt richtet sich explizit nicht nur an Erstsemester sondern an alle, die mitkommen wollen und Physik bzw. Geophysik/Meteorologie studieren. Wir wollen dafür sorgen und dazu beitragen, dass sich Menschen aus verschiedenen Semestern (und ähnlichen Studiengängen) kennenlernen.

Wir fahren wieder in das Selbstversorger*innenhaus in Wermelskirchen, wofür 25€ fürs Essen und Trinken eingesammelt werden, damit vorher jemand einkaufen gehen kann. Dort gibt es nicht nur Programm von Gitarren- und/oder Ukulelen-Workshop übers Krawall-Kaffee bis Wanderung zum See, sondern vor allem viel Zeit, um sich gegenseitig kennenzulernen, über alles mögliche zu reden und einfach eine gute Zeit miteinander zu verbringen. Die Fahrt lebt also davon, was wir draus machen, falls ihr also Programmideen habt, schreibt sie gern in die Anmeldung.

Am ersten Wochenende nach den Ferien (13./14.1.) werten wir das Ganze dann aus und schicken eine Mail an alle, die mitkommen können. In der zweiten Uniwoche nach den Ferien werden wir ein kurzes Vortreffen machen (genauer Termin folgt mit der nächsten Mail), aber so viel sei gesagt, wir fahren am Freitag (19.1.) mittag zusammen los ;D

Zur Anmeldung: Bitte füllt alles aus und denkt dran eure Mailadresse und jegliche Allergien und Unverträglichkeiten reinzuschreiben.

Sprecht gerne auch andere Leute aus der Physik an und weist sie auf die Fahrt hin.

Registration for winter retreat

The registration for the next retreat (19-21.1.24) is open. If you want to come along, please register by 12.1. (i.e. friday after the Christmas holidays) in the survey.

The trip is explicitly not only for first-year students, but for everyone who wants to come and is studying physics or geophysics/meteorology. We want to make sure and contribute that people from different semesters (and similar courses of study) get to know each other.

We are going to the self-catering house in Wermelskirchen again, for which 25€ will be collected for food and drink, so that someone can go shopping beforehand. There will not only be a programme ranging from guitar and/or ukulele workshops to „Krawall-Kaffee“ or a hike to the lake, but above all a lot of time to get to know each other, talk about everything and just have a good time together. The trip depends on what we make of it, so if you have any ideas for the programme, please write them in the registration form.

On the first weekend after the holidays (13/14 January) we will evaluate the whole thing and send an email to everyone who can come. In the second week of university after the holidays we will have a short pre-meeting (exact date will follow in the next mail), but we will leave together on Friday (Jan 19) at noon ;D

GPK: Two-dimensional materials for quantum networks

One of the major challenges for future quantum information technology is to establish a global quantum network, where different quantum systems are coupled via fiber-based single-photon channels. In such a quantum network, the analog of a bit in a classical computer, the quantum bit, has to be transferred to its optical counterpart, which is a single photon.

In her inaugural lecture, Annika Kurzmann will describe the main components and interfaces before discussing two-dimensional (2D) materials as a promising material platform for a quantum network.

Weihnachtsfeier // Christmas Party

Am Dienstag 12.12. ist es endlich wieder soweit. Nach dem GPK von Frau Kurzmann findet ab 18 Uhr unsere alljährliche Weihnachtsfeier im Foyer statt. Mit Musik, Waffeln, Kinderpunsch/Glühwein/Feuerzangenbowle wollen wir zum Ende des Jahres noch ein letztes Mal zusammen kommen und gemeinsam feiern. Vielleicht kommt ja sogar der Weihnachtsmann vorbei 😉
Also kommet zahlreich, ihr Kinder der Weihnacht, und trinket mit uns! In weihnachtlicher Besinnlichkeit. Mit Feuerzangenbowle, Bier oder einem leckeren Softgetränk. Mögen die roten Nasen euch durch die Dunkelheit führen.		 On Tue, 12.12. it’s finally time again. After Mrs Kurzmann’s GPK (from 18:00), our annual Christmas party will take place in the foyer. With music, waffles, children’s punch/mulled wine/burnt punch, we want to get together one last time at the end of the year and celebrate. Maybe even Father Christmas will drop by 😉
So come in large numbers, children of Christmas, and drink with us! In festive contemplation. With burnt punch, beer or a tasty soft drink. May the red noses guide you through the darkness.

Streik der Hilfskräfte und Hochschulmitarbeiter*innen // Strike of the university staff

Im kommenden Herbst finden die nächsten Tarifverhandlungen der Landesbeschäftigten statt, die voraussichtlich auch von Streiks an unserer Uni begleitet sein werden. Neben Lohnsteigerungen, die mindestens die Inflation ausgleichen sollen, geht es dabei vor allem darum, dass studentische und wissenschaftliche Hilfskräfte endlich überhaupt einen Tarifvertrag bekommen.Die jüngst erschienene Studie „Jung, akademisch, prekär“ zeigt deutlich, wie die Arbeitsbedingungen studentischer Beschäftigter an deutschen Hochschulen sind: Löhne auf Mindestlohnniveau, kurze Vertragslaufzeiten und Kettenverträge, fehlende demokratische Mitbestimmung… Schlechte Bedingungen, die es in fast keinem anderen Bereich der Arbeitswelt gibt. Nicht ohne Grund bleiben immer häufiger zahlreiche dieser Stellen unbesetzt. Selbst die Einhaltung arbeitsrechtlicher Mindeststandards wie Urlaubanspruch, Lohnfortzahlung im Krankheitsfall oder das Verbot von unbezahlten Überstunden sind bei den studentischen Beschäftigten eher die Ausnahme als die Regel.

Um einen Tarifvertrag für alle zu erstreiten, gibt es die bundesweite Tarifinitiative TVStud, die auch in Köln und insbesondere auch in der Kölner Physik aktiv ist.

Ob ihr selbst einen Arbeitsvertrag an der Uni habt, oder nicht: Beteiligt euch daran!

  • Wenn du an der Uni angestellt bist, fülle jetzt die Forderungsbefragung aus und beteilige dich im Herbst am Streik, wenn die Gewerkschaften dazu aufrufen.
  • Auch wenn du keinen Job an der Uni hast, kannst du dich an den Streikkundgebungen im Herbst beteiligen!

In jedem Fall: Spread the word!

 Next fall, the next collective bargaining for state employees will take place, which will probably be accompanied by strikes at our university. In addition to wage increases that should at least compensate for inflation, the main issue is that student and research assistants finally get a collective agreement at all.

The recently published study „Young, Academic, Precarious“ clearly shows the working conditions of student employees at German universities: Wages at minimum wage level, short contract terms and chain contracts, lack of democratic co-determination…. Bad conditions that exist in almost no other area of the working world. It is not without reason that an increasing number of these positions remain unfilled. Even compliance with minimum labor standards such as vacation entitlement, continued payment of wages in the event of illness or the prohibition of unpaid overtime are the exception rather than the rule among student employees.

In order to achieve a collective agreement for all, there is the federal collective agreement initiative TVStud, which is also active in Cologne and especially in Cologne Physics.

Whether you have an employment contract at the university or not: Get involved!

  • If you’re employed by the university, fill out the demand survey now and join the strike in the fall when the unions call for it.
  • Even if you don’t have a job at the university, you can still join the strike rallies this fall

In any case: Spread the word!

Im Gegensatz zu vielen anderen Institutionen, Unternehmen usw. ist die Uni weitgehend selbst verwaltet. Sie entscheidet selbst, wofür sie Geld ausgibt, wer hier arbeitet, welche Fachbereiche ausgebaut werden, wie die Studiengänge aussehen, die Gebäude ausgestattet sind etc.Wer noch Orientierung sucht:

Die Urnen stehen z.B. in der Physik oder in der Mensa, aber auch an vielen anderen Orten auf dem Campus. Ihr braucht nur euren Studierendenausweis und habt bis Freitag (8.12.) Zeit; die letzte Urne schließt um 18.15 Uhr in der Mensa.

 

 Unlike many other institutions, companies, etc., the university is largely self-governing. It decides for itself what to spend money on, who works here, which departments to expand, what the degree programs are, what the buildings are equipped with, etc.Elections are important, but orientation is often difficult. Those still looking for guidance:

  • Short introduction to university politics and the structure and committees of the University of Cologne
    Election newspaper: Here you can find self-portrayals of the groups running for election. Unfortunately, it’s complete in German, but there are groups who have QR codes to English translations

And: Ask the people who are campaigning!

The ballot boxes are everywhere and you have time until Friday, Dec. 8. (The last ballot closes on Friday 18.15 in Mensa.)
