GPK: Statistical physics approaches to understanding how antibiotics kill bacteria
Tuesday, 31.1., 16.00 (16.00 Coffee & Cake in the foyer, 16.30 talk & discussion)
Lecture Hall III
| Antibiotics are a mainstay of modern medicine, but there is huge global concern about the emergence of antibiotic resistantinfections. Despite their importance, we understand surprisingly little about how antibiotics actually inhibit bacterial infections. This is a complex problem because of the interplay between antibiotic action and bacterial growth, which connects with physics via nonlineardynamics, mechanics and stochasticity. Rosalind Allen will discuss how statistical physics approaches can provide new understanding. |
Vorstellung der Physik-Arbeitsgruppen // Presentation of the Physics Workgroups
A specialty of the Cologne Physics department is the vicinity of teaching to research. Starting quite early, students are involved in research projects. This is why we want to give the possibility to get to know the workgroups in a relaxed setting:

GPK: Topological one-dimensional conductors
Tuesday, 24.1., 16.00 (16.00 Coffee & Cake in the foyer, 16.30 talk & discussion)
Lecture Hall III
In solid-state matter, topological properties of the band structure can enforce the appearance of conducting one-dimensional edge states at the boundaries of the material, while the bulk remains insulating. These states provide a support system for ‘topological quantum bits’, robust against localperturbations, and envisioned to solve decoherence problems in therealization of quantum computers.
Erwann Bocquillon will discuss how one can utilize GHz excitations and current correlations to generate, manipulate and study excitations in these systems down to the elementary level of single electrons.
